I am a former student of the Shaolin Lohan Kung-fu, and here's my testimonial.
As a young man, I dabbled here and there in several Martial Arts. Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kali, Silat, and some classical Jujutsu. I would train
with various clubs and instructors based on what I found novel or effective at any given time, and I was captured by the romance of Wuxia
and Samurai films.
This all changed when I joined the Shaolin Lohan school of Kungfu in Rolla, MO where I discovered the first martial art I truly loved. The
physical training was very challenging. The techniques were beautiful, wild and dynamic. The community of people I trained with was
supportive and inspirational. I became a minor teacher of the art (Sihing) and learned the joys of helping facilitate other people's journey in
the Martial Arts. I watched our community of students grow from a club, to a school, and back to a club again which taught me about how
communities can be formed around common interests.
Most importantly, I learned the value of hard work - of Kung Fu. I came to understand the incremental nature of progress, the way to
cultivate willpower by consciously pushing past your limits, and I developed mental fortitude by failing at what seem like impossible tasks
until I eventually succeeded at them. The skill of doing hard work - and of learning to LOVE doing hard work - has stuck with me all these
years and has contributed to my success in all the facets of my life.
Though I am no longer with the School I continue to train martial arts to this day. The styles I practice have changed but the principles of
self-development and working to overcome my limitations have continued to inform my practice. I may have lost the Shaolin style, but I will
never lose the Kung Fu.
The Shaolin Lohan School Kung fu, its teachers, and my fellow students enriched my life in more ways that they will ever know, and my life is
richer for what I experienced there.
